밴더빌트대학교 (Vanderbilt University)에 대해 알아보자
밴더빌트대학교는 미국 테네시주 내슈빌에 있는 사립 종합대학교이다.
1873년 선박 및 철도 재벌 코르넬리우스 밴더빌트가 100만 달러를 기부해 설립했다.
밴더빌트는 밴더빌트대학교가 남북전쟁으로 갈라진 나라를 통합하는데 크게 기여하길 희망했다. 20세기 전반 밴더빌트 대학교의 '도망자'와 '남부 농민'이라는 지식인 모임이 미국 남부 지역의 문학을 부흥시키는데 기여했다.
밴더빌트대학교는 2023년 타임스고등교육 세계대학평가에서 98위를 기록했다. 2023년 유에스뉴스&월드리포트 미국대학순위에서는 전미 13위를 차지했다. 2023년 프린스턴리뷰는 미국 대학 가운데 학자금 지원 우수대학 1위, 학생 생활의 질 2위로 꼽았다.
1873년 미국의 재벌 코닐리어스 밴더빌트에 의해 설립되었다. 듀크 대학교, 라이스 대학교와 함께 미국 남부를 대표하는 명문 대학으로 평가된다. 영문 약자 표기는 VU, 하지만 보통 Vandy라는 애칭으로 불린다. 다소 보수적인 듀크 대학교보다는 진보적인 학풍을 갖고 있다고 평가받는다. 부통령 앨 고어, 존 낸스 가너, 7명의 노벨상 수상자, 퓰리처상 수상자, 아카데미상 수상자를 배출하였다. 2010년에는 오크리지 국립연구소와 밴더빌트 대학교의 합작 연구로 원자번호 117번의 새로운 원소 테네신을 발견하였다. 원소 이름의 유래는 당연히 밴더빌트 대학교가 위치한 테네시.
높은 학생수준과 낮은 교수 대 학생 비율 (학생6~7:교수1) 을 앞세워 학부에서 강세를 보인다. 실제로 학부 교육이 가장 탄탄한 대학들 중 하나이며 입학만 하면 대부분 학생수가 20명 내외인 수업을 들으며 교수들에게 꼼꼼한 관리를 받을 수 있다. 주립대들이 많은 학생을 받아 학생관리를 소홀이 하는 반면 밴더빌트는 여타 사립대학들처럼 탄탄한 재정과 교수들을 앞세워 최대한 많은 도움을 주고 어떻게든 뒤쳐지지 않도록 학생을 안고 가는 편이다. Throughout their years as an Ingram Scholar, students are required to
- maintain a twenty-hour monthly service commitment
- complete one summer service project following their sophomore year.
- meet weekly in large and small groups to discuss individual and collective progress, and to reflect on the personal meaning and societal implications of service.
